“I will serve you while I’m waiting” is a phrase from one of my favorite songs. I do not know who sings it but one that I enjoy and find meaning in my life. I have used that phrase in my life in the past few years when I attempt to make an impact in the communities around me.
I am a “newbie” on this trip and am enjoying serving the village and the residents living here. I have discovered on this trip that there is waiting here too! This morning as we “waited” for our instructions following changes in plans I admired the leaders of this group who took deep breathes and helped us get to where we needed to serve for the day.
I had the opportunity to start my day with a team of strong women and men. We served a family by installing a concrete floor. We shoveled, mixed and stirred using strength we did not know we had to complete half of the floor. I was thankful for the strength of men who carried the weight of elephants down very steep steps and did not fall on the way down. Now another family will be able to sleep on a cleaner floor instead of dirt. I am thankful that God provided this team of individuals with the strength and cooperation needed to “serve” his children. In the afternoon, I was involved in helping children from the village find new shoes. The smiles on their faces were the best as they walked out the door with clean, colorful new shoes. One little boy was so excited he jumped out the door with the tags still attached. As we “waited “for children to arrive I was blessed to spend time with another “newbie” who will be a blessing to the children she plans to teach. I was lucky to organize the shoes with a teacher from the orphanage. I could see that she serves with love and kindness.
Today was a day of hard work. However, I feel lucky to have this opportunity to serve while I “wait”.
